I continue to fiddle with the blog and fix the comments problem, but if you need to say anything, feel free to use the Blogger comments for now.
So far I've tagged every blog entry from now back to Election Day 2006. I have this obsessive goal now of labeling everything and cleaning up some of the dead links and phantom photos that aren't there any more.
The Labels are quite interesting, watching certain trends develop in my writing. Travel, Gaiman, Duder and Drinkall.
I planned on writing about my last weekend of vacation, and will do so tomorrow, but I really want to have the new blog done before I publish those pieces. Good thing we really don't do anything for Easter in my family. Yes, I am a Godless pagan. And it's time for bed.

Maintenance
Working on the blog for a while. Appearances may be all messed up for the time being.
EDIT: Every time I add the HaloScan comments, the heading disappears, so you may notice no comments. For now, I've turned on the Blogger comments, which can be accessed by the small number to the right of the post's date tag. Hopefully I'll get this issue solved by the end of the weekend.
2nd EDIT: In the process of tagging all the posts I should have been tagging for years. Now you can go back into the archives of this thing, all categorized by different subjects. I'm done with 2009 and most of 2008, but there's a long ways to go...
Still no proper comments, and I want to reorder the layout a bit more, but it's coming along. Hope it's not too busy, but there's just so much stuff to put on here.
And I have NO idea what that '5' is doing on the banner.

Kristine in L.A. or the Magnificent House Theatre?
Well, I've had quite the little day.
After several weeks of waking up way too damn early (because my head seems to want to wake up around 5 and just stew about the day), I slept blissfully late into the day. The house was cold, due to autumn finally arriving, and I slipped on a pair of woolen socks, put on my bathrobe, made a pot of coffee, and dug out something decent to read. (The Rebels of Ireland, finally.)
After a quick breakfast of egg and muffin (the English variety), I packed a bag and headed to my nearby sanctuary of trees and trails, and wandered for a while, letting ideas flow through my head, and occasionally stopping to write down the occasional brilliant idea for The Play.
All the while I pondered two possibilities: shall I head out to Los Angeles to hang out with the divine Kristine, on extended sabbatical from The Philippines? We have an eerily similar sense of taste, and could probably hang out for hours talking about Jeff Tweedy and Neil Gaiman. Perhaps at The Viper Room. It is Los Angeles, after all.
I wonder what Tony's doing?
My other possibility was attending a special screening of The Darjeeling Limited, where I'd get the chance to Q&A Wes Anderson and Jason Schwartzman. I knew I sill read that damn AintitCoolNews for a reason.

I won two tickets for the screening, by the way. Anyone want to go?
After searching ticket prices for CHI to LAX, I realized that I already had tickets for closing night of The Magnificents that weekend, which is kind of a big deal. Last House show at The Viaduct, you know.
So now I'm kind of fucked. For once in my life I have too much going on.
Perhaps I could go the previous weekend. It would involve blowing off two events, though: the dedication ceremony for my newly-built school, and my mother's birthday.
More on all of these events as they happen.
Oh, by the way: the Duders, Eric and Erica, had a beautiful baby girl last week. Life is wonderful.

A Happy Man

This is a picture of me.
It's a picture of me, in Dublin, at a Japanese restaurant.
That's Elimare next to me. She takes good pictures, by the way.
This is a picture of me quite happy, as you can see.
(It's probably because we were on our 5th or 6th beer by that point.)
It's my first night in Dublin, and I should be quite jet-lagged. But I look pretty good in this photo.
I like this photo of me. I think if I wanted a photo to be able to capture what I want to be in one image, this would be it.
It was taken by Isobel, and English girl who likes to knit. I found this picture on her Facebook site. So I stole it. Because it makes me happy to look at it.
Thanks for sending this out into the world, Issy.

The Gurrier and his Tales
Two links for you today...
One: Donal, your man from Dublin, has composed a rare auld treat for us all to share. The untold tale of what I was really doing in Ireland this summer. Read it, but be warned: them Irish have a way with words.
(You should also read his thoughts on D-Day after visiting Normandy last month. Quite good, quite good.)
Two: As revenge for putting me into one of The Gurrier's tales of lechery and buggery, I give you this video, taken after a few drinks, after a rainy hike around Wicklow.

I Love "I Love N.Y.E."
I was going to write a quick post about how disappointed I am that a song I really love is now being used to sell Saturn automobiles, but I told myself a) no more pissy posts, and b) no more pissy posts about obscure music.
The well seems dry this week, so I'm going to shamelessly steal from Spinning Girl and take requests: feel free to ask questions in the comments or in email form and I'll do my best to answer them.
I doubt this will work, since the majority of readers on this thing know me in person, and there probably isn't much about me that's unknown.
If worse comes to worse, you can query me to solve all your vexing problems: should you quit your job and travel around the world?* Does Grey's Anatomy promote inappropriate work relationships?** Is it considered proper to ride a Penny-farthing to a Box Social?*** I'm open for business.
I'm like Mary Worth, only online and not as condescending.
*Yes, and can I come with?
**If bosses fucking their subordinates is considered inappropriate, then Yes.
***Always.

Moving Day
When I first started writing this thing, back in 2003, Buzznet was ok. You could upload as many pictures as you wanted and there was a strong community feel to it, things I didn't get from Flickr in the beginning.
Even after Buzznet started to suck I tried to hang on, at least for the people I had come to know on the site. Bernardo always has excellent pictures of Chicago, it's nice to see what anti's up to, and every now and then someone interesting stops by and says hello.
Overall, though, using Buzznet these days feels like partying with a bunch of college kids: you enjoy your time with them, but deep down you know you can't do it all the time, and there's somewhere else you should probably be.
Which is Flickr, which I've used almost as long as Buzznet, but never fully committed to it until Bella gifted me my pro account last Christmas. (Have I professed my undying love for Bella lately? Well, there it is again.)
Today I really started organizing my Flickr page properly, loading up pictures of various Limelight productions and getting everything nice and ordered. Lots of this stuff has been seen before on Buzznet, but I gave some pics a much-needed once-through on my soon-to-be-expiring beta Lightroom program.
So Buzznet, I don't think we'll be hanging around too much any more. You can keep your overly busy, candy-colored interface and your constant My Chemical Romance promotions. I want to like you, I really do. We had some great times together, but I need something a little classier and smarter these days.
These and other pictures can be found on my Flickr page...

The Wooden Breeks
Snow's melting a bit today and I'm trying to get some work done so I can go out and play; maybe head over to the Arboretum and go for a walk, now that the temperature's gone up a bit.
President's Day, so I have a day off. Combined with last week's snow day, the shortened work weeks have been a much-needed break from a long six weeks or so. Lot of work, lots of strange moments, lots of irons on the fire, but that's good. It's work worth doing.
This is mostly a place-holder post, with nothing too exciting to report. Back in the city once again this weekend, saw The Wooden Breeks at Lookingglass. Disappointing play: hard to understand, too silly at times, no real clear idea of who the characters were supposed to be. Good acting, and great set design, but... meh. Just confirmed the greatness that was The Sparrow from The House.
Okay, time to go do some thinkin' about theatre. The summer season's a long ways away, but there's so much to do. Need to conceptualize The Tragedie of Julius Caesar, redesign a website, and come up with some advertising ideas.
Oh, and I got a decent tax return for the first time in my life, so I'm starting to think about travel plans again. Maybe I'll finally get over to the 'Dam and hang out with Bicyclemark and JaG. We could talk about evil governments and hot sex and Heroes. It would be awesome.

Spinning Girl's Photo Project
The most-impressive Spinning Girl had a little thing where she requested people to send her pics of their morning coffee rituals. I got in on the game, for the hell of it, and had to laugh at her assessment of my morning situation. Never has been heading off to an elementary school while stopping for a once-a-week expensive coffee been described so.... Important-like.
What I can't figure out is the whole ketchup thing.

Neil and The Departed
Neil Gaiman wants to fuck with Penn Jillette's head a bit, so I'm doing as he asked and linking this post.
And um...that's really about it. Nothing else really to say.
Finally saw The Departed. It really got me in the mood to do some Shakespeare again.

Random Notes
Last day of work today before a nice long break. And since I haven't even started my Christmas shopping yet, I'm going to need all the time I can muster. All the money as well. Gonna be a tight Christmas this year, but the suits came through and paid me my club stipend early. (I run an after-school environmentalist/outdoors-type club.) So it's kind of like a Christmas bonus.
Neil Gaiman linked this for all you Coraline fans.
Blogger beta is now just a new version of Blogger, and from what I can tell, it's still kind of shitty. I have vague plans to switch this over to my own server next year, but I'm not quite there yet. One step at a time.
Spinning Girl marks the ten-year anniversary of Carl Sagan's death, and also comes eerily close to describing my job.
Speaking of, Sylkk's got a new home.
One more link: The PhoenixNYC offers up some good thoughts on user-created content and the role of "gatekeepers" in the media.

5 Things You Don't Know About Me
JaG tagged me to do this, and you can't ever refuse a hot Dutch girl, so here goes...
1. For a few years I worked as a hired hand on a farm. Fed cattle, shoveled pig shit, cultivated fields, etc.
2. I scored a perfect on my last written driver's exam.
3. While I usually say I grew up in Sandwich, Illinois, to be truthful I also lived in St. Cloud, Florida for a few of my early teen years. Not sure how that impacted my formative years, but it probably made me over-nostalgic for a small town that I ended up obsessing over for too long.
4. I was Colin Firth's stand-in for the film A Thousand Acres, filmed not too far from Sandwich. I could have had some screen time as a double for Keith Carradine, but I couldn't get a hold of a tractor on 24 hours notice (despite #1 above.)
5. I had a hernia operation when I was five years old. Tried lifting a cement block in my grandma's garage. Oops.
Does this mean I have to tag five more people? Because I'm surprised I did this much. Really. I'm no good at memes.

Bella the Magnificent
Two great things happened this weekend.
1. The show was really, really good. More on that later.
2. Bella gave me a Flickr PRO account for Christmas!
Lots of great pictures being uploaded and organized here. For now, thank you thank you thank you Bella, you wonderful Canadian friend from afar!

Flickr PRO
I cough and I hack and I ache and I can't sleep for nothing and I'm trying to get this show ready to go and I seem to have forgotten all about this other place where I work or something.
I'm also thinking of springing for the Flickr PRO account and phasing away from Buzznet. Just can't dig what they're selling these days.
Back soon.

Blog Update
It's a good thing I had a snow day on Friday, because I spent most of my free time working on this new template.
I think it's just about finished. Holywriter, I agree: it's a bit too white right now (it's the anti-Myspace look,) but since I don't really know how to add boxes or borders to html templates, we'll have to leave it as is. Mark, glad you like the new look, although I wound up subconsciously stealing a few ideas from your layout. Consider it an homage...
Due to me being a public educator, I'm trying to distance myself from my real last name. It hasn't been much of a secret in the past, but from this point on it's probably best to use a pen name. Not that it'll chase away those that like to lurk here anonymously, waiting to slag me when the time is right, but that's what comment moderation is for I guess. (Hi Myrt!!)
You'll also find the archives have been repaired, and I've created a detailed list of what I would call the "best-of" from this blog. Updated all of my feed links and wish lists and PayPal buttons. Now if you wish to subscribe, send me presents or monetary donations, or read some of my past essays, everything is just a click away.
Consider this The State I'm In Version 2.0. The original version of this blog is done, to be replaced by a new look and a new direction. Not sure where it'll go, but I'm looking forward to the journey. Thanks to everyone that has stuck by this thing over the years, through the dark times and the occasional highlight.
Now, to teach myself how to vlog...
